The Provost for Medical Affairs is the chief educational and operating officer for Cornell University’s Joan and Sanford I. Weill Medical College and Graduate School of Medical Sciences. As the senior official responsible for health science programs, the provost provides oversight and leadership to foster academic, clinical, and research excellence, working cooperatively with affiliates (NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital, The Methodist Hospital in Houston, Texas), with Cornell’s Ithaca campus colleges, and with other medical and scientific institutions, including Sloan-Kettering Institute and The Rockefeller University. The provost also makes final decisions regarding the granting of indefinite tenure to faculty. The dean of the Medical College and the dean of the Graduate School of Medical Sciences report to the provost (currently, one person serves as medical provost and medical college dean).
In addition, the provost serves on the Board of Overseers of the Medical College and Graduate School of Medical Sciences, providing guidance in the development of annual and long-term operating and fiscal plans for both institutions and presenting these plans to the Cornell Board of Trustees. With the Ithaca provost, the Provost for Medical Affairs reports to the President of Cornell University.
In 1977, the position of Provost for Medical Affairs was created by the Board of Trustees to ensure that the University had an officer in residence at the Medical College with the same authority and responsibility as the Ithaca provost. The position has been held by:
